When it became apparent that DaimlerChrysler AG would discontinue the Dodge Ram 3500 van, a popular Class B Motorhome platform, long-time Canadian manufacturer Leisure Travel Vans (1999) Ltd. had an important decision to make. What chassis would meet the high standards LTV has for its products?

After a lengthy evaluation, including research trips to the German factory that builds the Mercedes Benz Sprinter commercial van, DaimlerChrysler's Detroit, Mich., headquarters and reassembly plant in Gafney, S.C., it was clear the 21.5 foot Sprinter van was the chassis for the job.

"We do our homework," said Don Klassen, manager of product development and engineering. "On our trip to Germany and discussions with the German engineers, we learned a lot more about the chassis and what it had to offer."

The most appealing aspects of the Sprinter was the 2.7 liter turbo charged 5-cylender Mercedes Benz diesel engine, with 22 (US) miles per gallon estimated fuel consumption and da 46.9 foot turning radius, Klassen said. "When we closely examined the chassis and its potential, we found the sprinter had 15% more cargo volume than the widebody class B converted Dodge and ford chassis and that we could get an industry leading 1200 plus pounds of carrying capacity which are both critical features to a Class B buyer."

"A lot of our customers are RVers who are downsizing from Class A diesel pushers and Class C motorhomes," Klassen said. "And that's one of the reasons they appreciate the diesel power provided by Leisure Travel Vans new Free Spirit van camper.

"They also want the same amenities provided by their big motorhomes and we have achieved it in a practical way. People are using their Free Spirit ad a second vehicle because you can park them anywhere, even in most condo developments that have restrictions on RV's".
